Every WordPress installation is bundled with Akismet plugin. Akismet is a great plugin and probably one of the must-use plugins in every WordPress site nowadays. Although Akismet does a very good job, we’ve seen that some blog still being hit by spam comments. Moreover, we’ve heard from many people that Akismet incorrectly flagged their comment as spam when they leave a comment on other sites. This is probably due to false-positive.
From the creator of Commentluv plugin, introducing Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin (GASP). GASP does a very great job to combat spam comments by adding a checkbox underneath the comment form asking the comment author to confirm that they are not a spammer.
Although we’re not using GASP here, we’re using it on few of our clients’ sites and it does a great job so far. For some unknown reasons, we’ve seen many spam comments managed to bypass the Akismet filter in some websites. With GASP, that will no longer happen.
Should you deactivate Akismet?
No, you shouldn’t. Unfortunately, GASP does not work really well to combat spam attack by trackback. As a solution, we usually recommend using GASP besides Akismet. By using both, we’re pretty sure that your site is 95% safe from any spam comments.
