How to Extend Functionality of Genesis Featured Post Widget

Genesis-Framework

In StudioPress forum, we’ve seen many times some folks asking about the possibility to display custom post type items in their custom widgetized homepage. A few months ago, we published an interesting article about displaying custom post types in Genesis Featured Post widget.

In that article, we recommended our users to use Genesis Featured Widget Amplified plugin by NickTheGeek. However, we did notice that the plugin is a bit buggy and the developer no longer maintain the plugin. At the time of writing this article, the plugin is still not being updated with HTML5 markup that comes with Genesis 2.0.

Luckily, there’s an alternative for the plugin. Thanks to Travis Smith, or also known as WPSmith, for forking the plugin. He renamed it as Genesis Sandbox Featured Content Widget and you may download it from Github.

Since the plugin is based on Nick’s plugin, it got all the same features as Nick’s plugin with these additional new features:

  • More filters/actions
  • Addition of column classes (including option for fifths class) & custom classes
  • WP_Query optimization for speed
  • HTML5 & Genesis 2.0 updated
  • Excerpt length & cutoffs options
  • White labeled naming option
  • Added remove displayed posts option (won’t display a post that already exists on the page)

The addition of filters and functions will help users to easily customize the HTML output of the widget. We’re pretty sure lots of Genesis Framework users will be benefited from this plugin. What’s your thought about this plugin? Do you have any another alternative? Please share it with us in the comment section below.
