How to Use Custom Author Base Slug in WordPress

WordPress gives you flexibility to control the structure of permalink on your site. However, it does not provide you with an easy way to use custom author base slug.

Here’s the default structure of permalink for author archives

http://example.com/author/username

As you can see from the permalink structure above, /author/ is the base slug for the author.

However, it’s really easy to change it. Simply install and activate Edit Author Slug plugin.

Once activated, go to Settings > Edit Author Slug and insert a new author base slug for your site.

In this example, I use writer as the new author base slug. As the result, my new author permalink will be

http://example.com/writer/username

Additionally, the plugin also gives you an option to change the author slug. Let’s take a look back at the default permalink structure for author archives

http://example.com/author/username

As you can see, the last part of the permalink will show their username for each user. Using this plugin, this can be edited. Simply go to your profile, and you’ll notice a new option to insert a new slug for your profile.

However, please note that changing the author base slug or author slug do not have any SEO effect on your site. It’s just to make your author base slug or author slug looks nicer. This plugin has also been tested and it works perfectly on WordPress Multisite installation as well.
