WordPress 101: Change Default Category in WordPress

By default, WordPress comes with Tag and Category taxonomies. This is great to manage all of your articles. For more information about WordPress taxonomy, I highly encourage you to read over WordPress Codex – Taxonomies.

Every WordPress installation comes with Uncategorized category. Any new post that you do not assign to any category will also be assign to this default category. Previously I’ve wrote an article about creating a new category and tag. If you’re still new with WordPress, be sure to read that.

So, how do you change the default category? How about renaming the Uncategorized category to another name?

Set a New Default Category

To set a new default category for your post, you can do that from Writing settings page. From your dashboard, go to Settings > Writing.

Default Category

From the drop down, choose any category that you had created.

Renaming Uncategorized Category

To rename the Uncategorized Category, you can do that from the Category settings page. Go to Posts > Categories.

1. Hover on the Uncategorized link and you’ll see few new links (options) below it.

WordPress Category

2. Click on the Quick Edit link and change it as you wish.

Remember, the purpose of using the Category taxonomy is to sort all of your posts into the similar topic. It also makes it easier for readers to navigate through your website. Therefore, if possible, use a short and meaningful name for a category. Something like – Tutorials, Tips, News, Freebies – will do!
