One of the main new features will be available in the new wordpress version is the merging with WordPress Multi user platform, it will be called WordPress Multi Sites or Network. here are some steps you need to take in order to enable the network feature.
1. first you need to add this line to your wp-config.php file:
define(‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true);
after that you will see a new option under Tools, it will be called Network.
Now you need to follow the regular WordPress Mu steps and then press the install button.
2. after installation complete you still need to make some changes, add a new folder in the wp-content folder called blogs.dir, it is a folder for all the content and media of the sites in your network.
3. then you need to add some lines to your wp-config again and some lines to your .htaccess. as seen in this screenshot:
4. Now your regular WordPress installation is a Multi sites Network you can use as you used to work with your WordPress Mu. now we just have to wait and see if the upgrade from wordpress mu websites will go smooth as expected.
As i wrote before (WordPress Mu Plugins – Where Can I Find Them?), sometimes i get to work on a WordPress Mu project. Comparing to the regular WordPress platform, the sources for themes and plugins are little. So as i did before, why not sharing with you the best websites and places to get themes to work with on Wordpres Mu.
The long waited version of WPMU is finally released. with the new admin interface like its bigger sister, and a few more surprises, read some more about it here.
You can upgrade from 2.6.5 quite easily, just:
1) backup eveything
2) delete your WP-admin and WP-includes
3) delete all files in the root directory (I prefare leaving the wp-config, and not delete this file)
Lately i’ve been working on some WordPressMu projects, soon i will be able to share them with you, but at the moment i thought sharing with you one of the main problems while working with the WordPress Multi User platform, and the problem is finding the plugins.
while most of the plugins we are using with a regular blog of wordpress can also be used on a WordPress Mu website, there are a fewer places where you can find plugins for WPMU. here’s a list of the better places to find them. please feel free to add more places on the comments area.
maybe a new tradition and maybe not, i don’t know yet, but here are some interesting news from the world of wordpress for this week.
WordPress 2.7
released officaily this month, beside the change of the admin interface, a lot of improvements comes with this new WP version.
actually we upgraded too but you can’t see it becasuse it only affects the admin area. here you can read more about the many changes of 2.7 and here is a video from wordpress.org blog about the new version:
BuddyPress is a set of WordPress MU specific plugins, each plugin adding a distinct new feature. BuddyPress contains all the features you’d expect from WordPress but aims to let members socially interact.
